Here at Zen Beds & Sofas, we have worked hard for over 27 years to manufacture and supply our customers with a range of superior quality latex mattresses in Brisbane. Over time our knowledge of this product has of course been tested, and we have always been happy to share all that we know.
Often asked about the benefits of choosing a 100% latex mattress as opposed to a traditional or memory foam alternative, we have found it useful to compile a list of FAQs to help raise awareness of the advantage of latex.

Health
Is a 100% latex mattress suitable for allergy sufferers?
Absolutely. A 100% natural latex mattress is the ideal choice for allergy sufferers due it being hypoallergenic. Because the mattresses that we supply are dust mite resistant and anti-bacterial, you can be safe in the knowledge that your selection from our range at Zen Beds & Sofas will not exasperate your sensitivities.
Is a latex mattress suitable for asthma and hay fever sufferers?
Sufferers from asthma and hay fever are often distressed by the presence of feathers, down or dust. Latex is dustless and contains nothing that can disintegrate to form irritating particles in the air.
Is it true that latex is germ, moth and vermin resistant?
Latex is by nature aseptic (free of pathogenic micro-organisms) and repels germs. It has the highest natural bacteriostatic and antibacterial properties, unmatched by any other polyurethane or synthetic foam. We find it amazing that natural latex also happens to be moth and vermin resistant. As a result, latex rubber is widely used in hospitals.
Do latex mattresses provide a healthier sleep?
A latex mattress retains its shape and cushioning properties very well, uniformly supporting the sleeper whilst its softness provides overall comfort. Our Zen Beds & Sofas 100% latex mattresses are specially made to breathe more freely and mould to your body shape, providing correct ‘spine in line support’.
Most wonderfully latex is quick to recover to its original shape and so any motion disturbance caused by tossing and turning Is absorbed into the mattress, rather than being transferred from one sleeping partner to another.
Durability
How long will a 100% natural latex mattress last?
Latex has the capacity to withstand hard wear without collapsing or losing its shape. This makes purchasing a latex mattress a wonderful investment. Direct Ultra Violet light is often the cause of rubber perishing, but because the latex rubber is covered with a mattress fabric you can be assured that a Zen Beds & Sofas mattress will not break down over time.
Will my latex mattress be odourless?
The best way to check this is to come in to our Zen Beds & Sofas showroom and smell a latex pillow, mattress or sample containing latex. Raw latex is odourless and any compounds used in the processing of the rubber are washed out from it.
Does latex get damp?
Whilst sleeping we all lose water through respiration and transpiration. The good news is that this will not affect the longevity of your 100% latex mattress as latex does not absorb dampness from the atmosphere. And because air circulates continually through the rubber, any excess moisture is dissipated.
Does latex get hot?
Rubber has an unfounded reputation for being hot due to its connection with impermeable surfaces that do not ‘breathe’ such as groundsheets, air beds, etc.
However, 100% latex rubber is very porous. The pin core construction of latex promotes air flow: as the rubber is compressed and released, air is circulated around the material.
Is latex dusty?
As long as the latex rubber is protected from UV light, it will not disintegrate or break down and therefore it is free from dust. This makes a Zen Beds & Sofas 100% latex mattress a perfect choice for those with allergies or asthma.
Environment
Is a 100% natural latex mattress environmentally friendly?
A 100% natural latex mattress is widely considered the most eco-friendly option.
Latex is a natural rubber, extracted from the Hevea Brasiliensis tree through an environmentally ‘soft’ process. Rubber tree plantations are carefully maintained and renewed, and as the demand for natural rubber has increased, so has the reforestation of rubber plantations. This is preserving significant forest areas essential to the conservation of the earth’s biosphere.
In addition to being made from sustainable materials, another benefit of a 100% natural latex mattress is that it does not emit any gases into the home.
Do your latex mattresses have any harmful chemicals in them?
The components used in the manufacturing process of latex are not toxic. A great validation of this is that our production staff are not required to take any special precautions when handling the latex ingredients. After all, we don’t want any nasties coming near us either!
Are the eco-credentials of your mattresses certified?
We only supply mattresses that are certified by the ECO-INSTITUT, a highly respected German testing laboratory. This ensures that the ‘naturalness’ of the product has been verified and has been given a unique Certificate ID Number.
Quality
Do latex mattresses come in different levels of quality?
To be classed as a latex mattress in Australia, as little as 30% of the mattress needs to be latex, meaning that a staggering 70% can be formed from other components that may not be sustainable materials.
When you choose Zen Beds & Sofas as your mattress provider, you can be rest assured that our range is 100% natural latex, giving our customers the very best in quality.
Is a latex mattress flammable?
Unfortunately we can’t say that latex rubber is fireproof, but it is certainly less flammable than polyurethane foam and produces no toxic gases when burning.
Has the quality of your 100% latex mattresses been proven?
The highly resilient and extremely durable latex that is used for our mattresses comes from a source that has been producing the product for over 50 years. It is not uncommon to replace the cover of one of these latex mattresses after 30 years to discover that the rubber is still in good condition.
General
Are the latex mattresses that you sell available in different sizes and densities?
Our extensive 100% natural latex mattress range offers you the option to purchase single, double, queen, king, king single and custom sized mattresses. These are available in all three densities (soft, medium, hard) so that your current bed frame as well as your personal preferences will be completely accommodated for when you come to us for a new mattress.
Are 100% natural latex mattresses expensive?
Nothing is more expensive than a poor quality mattress that quickly loses its comfort and requires replacing after a couple of years. However, a good quality latex mattress that is both durable and comfortable is one of the best investments that you can make.
Latex is practically indestructible, and with the correct care it will last indefinitely. Combined with the fact that a 100% latex mattress can help promote good health, we believe that a purchase of this kind represents the highest value for money in the truest sense of the word. Nothing is more valuable than your health.
At Zen Beds & Sofas we are also proud of being able to maintain consistently lower prices across all our items by keeping as much of our production on-site and sourcing materials from local suppliers where possible. Since purchasing our old saw-tooth roofed warehouse over 15 years ago we have lovingly restored and converted it into what is now Zen Beds & Sofas’ small factory and beautiful showroom. We welcome you to come see it in person!
What is the best base to use with my latex mattress?
For a 100% latex mattress we highly recommend a base that does not sag and which permits the mattress to ventilate itself. Any good box spring base or slotted wooden base that conforms to these requirements is suitable.
Of course we’d love you to take a look at the Zen Beds & Sofas range of hand-crafted wooden beds too, as they are all perfect for accommodating your new latex mattress. View our handmade wooden beds range here.
